What
on earth is a Victorian Calling
Card? It's not from the phone company! :)
Ah, the olden days when we
spent more time sitting and chatting and connecting face to face!
A
delightful custom which began in Europe around 1800, Calling Cards were
a way of introduction upon moving to a new location, a way of
exchanging contact information, and a way of communicating without
words!
As with the language of Fans, the language of Calling
Cards
developed to be quite elaborate; for example, a folded lower right
corner on the calling card meant a call of condolence. The
"proper" Victorian home had a small silver tray or dish in the entryway
for receiving calling cards. Having an elegant calling card
case
for carrying one's calling cards was also the norm. Victorian
Calling Cards could be simple or elaborate featuring styles from lined
drawings to vivid color and ornate embossing.
Placement of
the printing also
varied and could even be "hidden" beneath a flap.
